Saturday, November 5, 2005 - Pole Green Park, Hanover Country, VA

Drew Spicer kept coach Stockdreher's string of AAA State Championship meet appearances intact with a strong 12th place finish in Saturday's Central Region Championship. Drew stayed with the leaders from the start of the race. With under 1000 meters to run, Drew had dropped to about 16th, but passed several runners, including one in the final 50 meters to finish 12th.

The remaining Deep Run boys, denied the chance to run in the varsity meet after a 5th place finish in the District Meet, got revenge in the sub-varsity race. They took first, with David Lynch shaking off a pre-race auto accident to lead the race from nearly start to finish. Booth Hornsby(6th) and Matt Turner(8th) joined David in the top 15 finishers.

Kate Putney was the first Deep Run girl to cross the finish line the girls' varsity Central Region Championship. Erin Bragg finished next for Deep Run, followed by Rebecca Kuzemchak, Katie Harrell, Dominique Bennett, Stephanie Morton and Lindsey Jones.

It was a somewhat disappointing finish to a season that started with great promise at the Fork Union meet. The high level of competition in the Central Region will continue for years to come, as there were only 2 seniors among the top 15 finishers.

Atlee and Hanover placed 1st and 2nd in the Capital District and posted time that will require the Wildcat girls to perform at their best to move on.

Lindsey Jones returned to competition after nearly a month off and finished just 1 second off the varsity pace with a 10th in the sub-varsity girls race.

Boys miss regional qualifying by 2 points

Booth Hornsby and Matt Turner both set new personal records, cutting more than a minute off their previous bests, to give the Wildcats an unexpected shot at qualifying for the regional championship. Drew Spicer finished 4th in the varsity boys race, but the Godwin boys edged out the Wildcats for 4th place. Drew advances to the regional championship with a top 15 placement. Despite the disappointment of a 5th place finish, the Deep Run boys can look forward to returning every runner for the 2006 season. Twelve Deep Run boys ran their fastest race of the season, and two more (Spicer and Lynch) ran their fastest 5K.

Drew Carson(3rd) and Marshall Podgurski(8th) showed promise for things to come as they placed in the top ten in the sub-varsity boys race, bettering several varsity finishers.
