Colonial District Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet
February 16-17, 2006 - Arthur Ashe Center, Richmond, VA
Briana Hudson's 1st place finish in the high jump paces DRHS girls
Deep Run girls scored in every event during the two-day Colonial District championship meet, sending 22 individuals and all three relay teams to the regional championship meet next week.
Wildcat boys 1st in high jump and pole vault competition
While not quite up to the girls' standards, the Deep Run boys posted great results in the District meet, with 2 first place finishes. Eight individual winners and all three relay teams will advance to the regional championship.
Girls score early and often in winning District trophy
Briana's first place in the high jump and the girls 4x200 M relay win were the highlights in two days of exciting competition at the Colonial District Championship meet. Briana Hudson and Katelyn Zimmerman started the team toward their record-breaking performance by finishing 1-2 in the high jump on Friday night. Marlena Daly finished 5th in the high jump to join Briana and Katelyn in advancing to the Regional championships. Samanta Autry scored 1 1/2 points with a tie for 7th. Later Friday, Ashley Orr and Megan Fuson finished 3rd and 4th in the long jump to bring home 29 points. Marlena Daly also scored in the long jump with a 7th place finish. Sarah Callaway finished 6th in the pole vault and Grace Seal also scored in the pole vault. A 5th place finish by the girls 4x800 M relay wrapped up the scoring for the first evening, leaving Deep Run in the lead.
Saturday began with Briana Hudson and Marlena Daly finishing 2nd and 3rd in the triple jump, helping Deep Run shrug off Ashley Orr's failure to get a clean jump. Latina Mason advanced to the regional championship with a 6th place toss in the shot put. The running events started with Jacquelyn Wright placing 6th and Samantha Autry scoring with a 7th place finish in the 55M hurdles. Later, four Wildcats in the top 6 in the 55 M dash. Ashley Orr and Megan Fuson finished 2nd and 3rd, followed by Marlena Daly and Katie Fuson in 5th and 6th. All four advance to the regional meet. Shortly thereafter, Marlena and Katie joined Briana and Joanna Hassell to win the 4s200 M relay, as Joanna came from behind in the last lap to take the crown.
With Erin Bragg's third place finish in the 1600, the DRHS girls were clearly destined to win the meet. Megan Fuson returned to the track to take 2nd in the 500 M dash. Beth Olberding joined Megan in going to the regional championship with a 6th place finish, while Courtney King scored with a 7th place finish. Sarah Dillon ran to a 6th place finish in the 1000 M. Ashley Orr, Megan Fuson, and Katie Fuson returned to take 3rd, 5th, and 6th place finishes in the 300 M dash.
Erin Bragg followed her 3rd place finish in the 1600M with a great run to a 2nd place in the 3200M. Jennifer Harrell finished in eighth place to also score in the 3200M. In the final event of the evening, the girls 4x400 M relay team took 2nd.
Deep Run boys try to keep pace with the Girls' success
Deep Run's boys posted 4th place finishes in the long jump (Kirk Fischer) and shot put (Kevin Parkhurst) to begin the championship on Friday night. Later, the boys 4x800 M relay added another 4th place finish.
Matthew Armentrout won the pole vault in Saturday morning's events with a 12' 6" leap. While Matthew was jumping, Kirk Fischer also gathered a 1st place in the high jump, clearing 6' 1". As the field events concluded, Kirk Fischer added a 4th in the triple jump.
In the running events, Akeriam Reames posted an 8th place finish in the 55M dash. The boys 4x200 M relay posted a 4th place finish, making the 5th fourth place finish in the meet for DRHS boys. Drew Spicer then followed with, you guessed it, another 4th place finish in the 1600 M run.
David Lynch then ran to a 2nd place in the 500M dash. After that, it was left to Drew Spicer, with a 2nd in the 3200 M run, and the boys 4x400 M relay to finish the scoring for the boys team.
