JV Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field for 8th Graders
8th Graders can practice and compete at Deep Run in Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field to gain valuable experience and training.
Cross Country
Cross Country training begins June 21st with voluntary practices at 8:00 am. Athletes will meet at Deep Run High School on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Follow the attached training schedules if you can't attend practice.
The recommended camp is Blue Ridge Running Camp, held at Eastern Mennonite University from July 26th to Aug. 1st. Registration information can be found at http://www.blueridgerunning.com . Another in Richmond option is the S.T.A.R. camp at Pocahontas state park www.starcampsandcoaching.com.
The first official day of Cross Country practice is August 9th. From Aug. 9th to Sept. 3 Practice will be at 7:00 am at Deep Run High School. The regular season runs from Aug. 9 through mid-November. Regular season meets are on Wednesdays and there are 3-4 invitational meets on Saturdays. All races are 5K (3.1 miles).
All athletes have to have a physical on a VHSL Physical Form, which can be printed from http://www.vhsl.org or found in the Deep Run HS school office. Athletes should also have good running shoes, a stopwatch, and water bottle.
Athletes must provide their own transportation to Deep Run each day during the school year.
Indoor Track and Field
Indoor Track begins in late November and runs through mid February. 8th graders will practice and compete at meets. Practice will be everyday from
4:10 to 6:00 after school. Meets are on Saturdays and some Wednesdays throughout the season. Meets are held at Arthur Ashe Center and other facilities.
All athletes have to have a physical on a VHSL Physical Form which can be printed from http://www.vhsl.org or found in the Deep Run HS school office. Athletes should also have good running shoes, a stopwatch, and water bottle.

These JV opportunities are a great way to get a head start on training and learn about the sport.
